Mains on End

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
The Concept
The concept was really simple… just show the story of the movie as levels of the original game.
This mains on end sequence for Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was inspired by SEGA’s 1996 game Sonic the Fighters, featuring angular and dynamic character designs that reflect the evolution of the film series and franchise. As Picturemill’s third collaboration with director Jeff Fowler and producers Neal Moritz and Toby Ascher, this sequence builds on the visual legacy of the previous films while embracing a new 16-bit 3D aesthetic.
The Process
Staying true to the franchise’s roots.
As Sonic fans, we drew inspiration from the movies and games, merging Sonic’s fast-paced energy with a hyper-stylized 16-bit 3D world inspired by Sonic the Fighters. Using Maya, Cinema4D, and Blender, we modeled, rigged, and animated Team Sonic for a high-energy credits sequence.
Set in a dynamic, holographic video-game world, the environment shifts in real-time as characters blaze through, carving their own paths. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, and the Chaos appear with signature movements and personalities. Highlights include battles with Robotnik’s Mech Crab, the Eclipse Cannon, and a high-speed motorcycle chase, with credits seamlessly integrated into the action.
The Impact
Fans, critics, and even Jelly Roll liked it.
This latest Mains on End sequence was an absolute thrill to create. Thanks to the incredible support from the Sonic team, we had the creative freedom to bring this high-speed vision to life. Fans and critics alike have praised the sequence for its electrifying visuals, nostalgic references, and seamless blend of classic and modern Sonic elements.
The sequence features Jelly Roll’s “Run It,” a high-energy music track that perfectly complements Sonic’s fast-paced world and further enhances the immersive experience. We were honored to create the music video for the track in a consistent style as the title sequences.
